I will never complain about the weather again.

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 11, 2008, 5:03 PM

Monday started cloudy, with random bursts of rain; when we began putting our tent together I thought it would blow over within an hour, so I just wore a normal jacket. [link] (Note: A HAT!)

Within two hours, the soil became waterlogged.

After three hours, I had forgotten what it felt like to be warm and dry. [link]

By the fourth hour, the rain had become torrential, so we had to waddle to shelter or drown while standing under a tree.

About six hours later, the tent was finished; however, our tired, numb fingers couldn't quite make it leak-proof.

Fortunately, they forecasted that that night would be freezing cold, making the waterlogged ground as cold and hard as iron.

Why "Fortunately"? Because it meant that we didn't have to spend the night in the tent after all.

Lesson?
The darker the cloud, the brighter the silver lining.

0Hamster0's Last Will and Testament

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 27, 2008, 2:06 PM

The next project for our Architecture group is to design a tent which will be able to remain on our University campus for a week.

The test for durability will be for 3 people per team to stay over during the night, on 10th November.

The cold, November night.

In the middle of a University campus.

And guess who volunteered to be one of the three?

If I lose my fingers to frostbite, you can have my gloves.

The spoils of the Storm

Journal Entry: Sun Oct 19, 2008, 1:51 AM

6 weeks.
108 entries.
Over 100 Notes.

1 contest.

Four winners.

Whittling down over 100 entries was no easy task, so we had to create some kind of system to ensure that each and every entry had a fair chance. There was also the fact that, faced with all these entries showing varied interpretations of the Storm-theme, we had no idea beforehand of which entries would make it through to the finals.
Firstly, we split the entries into categories depending on their media (Traditional, Digital, Literature and Photography). After that, we both scored them out of three, and kept the ones with a combined score of 5 or 6.
There were still over 50 entries at this point, so we scored them again and discussed them until we narrowed it down to 4 entries - and believe me, we couldn't narrow it down any further.
It was during the last step and the ranking that followed, that we looked critically at the link between the entries and the Storm theme - even then there was still quite a bit of discussion before we reached a ranking which we both agreed on.

And now, with no further ado...

The Winners! :trophy:

~Third place~ :salute:

*Nelleke: This picture speaks for itself; it's amazing. The dark sky, the contrasting atmosphere between calm and cozy and doomfull, the perspective... all was great. Congratulations!! =D

*0Hamster0: The level of detail is enough to make a camera jealous, and the level of skill involved is enough to make a perfectionist smile. Aside from the looming tower-of-power that is the tornado, there are so many little things to look at and pore over, like the distant mountains, the clumps of greenery, and the lit house which may or may not be deserted...

_~Second place(s)~_ - a tie! :excited:

*Nelleke: This lovely pic too combines the literal shape of Storm with a conceptual and emotional one.. it's a picture with a story. And it's also greatly drawn! Beautiful ^-^ Congratulations!! =D

*0Hamster0: This is thought-provoking on so many levels - is the man a broken man, pushed to the limits of endurance? Or has he just smoked a bad spliff? Whatever the emotions running through him, the intensity of his "Inner Storm" is enhanced by the storm raging just behind him... a well-deserved DD, too. ;)

FEATURES

*Nelleke: The strength of this poem is it's rythm.. reading it goes so easy, almost floath-like (unfortunately I myself am not a poet, so I'm not very good at explaining what I mean ^^;). This entry too combines a symbolic meaning with a literal one, and did it greatly. Congratulations!! It's a great piece of literature, and fits the theme really well =D

*0Hamster0: The power of the written word, eh? This poem combines a powerful rhythm, syntax, diction and a host of other fancy-sounding pieces of jargon, to create a piece of literature which both flows easily and makes you think. A joy to read, even at 1 o'clock in the morning.

FEATURES

_~*FIRST PLACE*~_ :#1:

*Nelleke: This picture is beautiful  It combines Storm in a physical way with rain, stormy clouds, sea, an umbrella and stormy colours, with a conceptual way. All bases are covered ;) Greatly done!! =D Congratulations!!

*0Hamster0: As Nelleke says, this one picture covers every possible aspect of the Storm - its power, its energy, its emotion. The mildly surreal feel of it also allows the viewer to take any meaning they want from it: is the woman mourning at the grave of a loved one, or is she walking as fast as she can away from that looming ship? Is the ship a bearer of bad news, or is it about to become a victim of the storm? Whatever you may see in it, you'll want to look again and again, drawn by the power of the storm.

Congratulations to you all! :winner:

Before we began this contest, I thought that we would receive about 20 entries over the 6 weeks, if we were lucky.
In the first week, we received about 25.
By the end, we had over 100.
We're so sorry that we can't award everyone who took the time and effort to make something just for this contest - especially those who had to work against time restraints, or language barriers. All I can say is that I hope that entering this contest has been a learning curve for you guys - especially the one who entered a contest for the first time, and the one who entered 4 variations on the space-/fire-storm concept. ;P

One final roll-call of the entries...

I'll put it plainly.

- Remember that Storm Contest? One of the prizes includes 3-month features in mine and Nelleke's journals and Shoutboards.

- It's a bit difficult to do features without a sub.

- It's a bit difficult to buy subs with a debit card when it requires a credit card. (On a side-note, it's difficult to buy anything in the deviantSHOP without a credit card. Hallo, dA? Some of us haven't signed over our houses/cars/souls to the devil bankers. :P )

So the only solution I can think of is some kind of commission. You tell me what you want me to make, I then make it, and you then buy me a 3-month sub (It's best if you sub me AFTER I've made the commission - it's a little unfair otherwise. I mean, I might rip you off. :P ).

On a lighter note...

On Tuesday morning, I woke up on someone else's kitchen floor.

I hadn't slept in my own flat-room for a week.

I love University life.

It all happened because of the cheesecake.

We spent most of Thursday's morning and afternoon reliving our childhoods by working with paints and waxes. I couldn't think of many ideas that didn't run along the lines of let's-draw-random-lines-with-wax,-cover-them-in-paint-and-call-it-art, but some of the pieces of work that others did were actually pretty impressive.

During the lunch break, my friends and I went shopping to buy food for dinner that evening.
We forgot to buy food for lunch.

Once that art lesson had finished, we started cooking our dinner.
The cheesecake was conceived around this point.
Just so you know, Lancaster cheese tastes OK with macaroni.

The evening art lesson involved drawing a skeleton.
Actually, there was a naked lady too, but 1. She's naked. I have standards :P and 2. She was about 50 years old. I have standards. :O
Anyway, it wasn't actually bad at all: there were other Muslims there too, and we were out of the tutor's line of sight and earshot, so we could talk while we worked. I had a conversation with someone who was born in Syria, studied in Britain, got married in Belgium, lived for a while in Holland, before moving back to Britain to start University.
And she's just 20. :O_o:

Once that lesson had finally finished - at 9p.m. - me and my friends made our way back to the kitchen that had our food in.
The cheesecak
